High-desert luxury in the shadow of the Boulders.
Carefree sits in the high Sonoran Desert of far northeast Maricopa County, north of Scottsdale and immediately east of Cave Creek, where the terrain turns to weathered granite boulders and open desert. At roughly 2,400 feet of elevation across about nine square miles, it is a small, deliberately low-density town — the 2020 census counted just over 3,600 residents.

Overview
Frontier desert character, minutes north of Scottsdale.
Cave Creek sits in the Sonoran Desert of northern Maricopa County, on the northern edge of Scottsdale and immediately west of Carefree. Soldiers from Fort McDowell settled the area in 1870, prospectors struck gold in 1873, and the town — named for the cave beside the creek it grew along — carried that frontier history into its incorporation as a town in 1986.

Overview
Arizona’s highest-end desert address, around Pinnacle Peak and the McDowells.
North Scottsdale is the upper, most recently developed reach of the City of Scottsdale — the desert north of the city’s historic core, rising toward Pinnacle Peak, Troon, and the McDowell Mountains. Scottsdale incorporated in 1951, but this was long its least built-up quarter; today it is the most actively developed, and home to the highest residential property values in Arizona, many exceeding $5 million.
